These came to us as part of a lot of surplus stock, with no information other than the makers name (Rean) they look similar to the old 1/4″ jacks but the opening is smaller, approx. 4.1mm in daimeter. We can find no reference to jack plugs or sockets of that diameter so we have listed them at this low price in the hope that they may be of some interest to electronics buffs for experimentation etc.
A switching jack socket is an audio connector with built-in internal mechanical switches (these are normally closed) that change state when a plug is inserted. They are commonly used to disconnect an internal speaker when headphones are plugged in, or to route battery power on/off in active guitar circuits and pedals.
How Switching Contacts Work
- Normalled / Shunting: When no plug is inserted, the tip or ring contact makes physical contact with a dedicated switch terminal.
- Deflection: Inserting a jack plug pushes the internal spring leaf away, closing the secondary circuit path.
- Common Use Cases: Muting local amp stages, grounding inputs to kill hum when unplugged, or routing auxiliary signal paths.
These are open framed panel mounting DPNC (double pole normally closed), inserting the jack plug opens first the top two contacts, further insertion opens the bottom two.

These parts came to us as part of a lot of surplus stock from a large MILSPEC type Co. and have been kept in storage for some time, we have therefore classified them as ‘new other’, they are however pristine, the photographs are representative of their excellent condition, being of some of our actual stock, and, as with all our products they come with a full guarantee.
