GENUINE Tesla parts in 40PDIP package

8-bit microprocessor manufactured during the 1980s by the Tesla state enterprise in Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic and Slovakia). It is an identical, unlicensed replica of the Intel 8080A, originally designed for use in industrial controls, educational computer kits, and hobbyist electronics behind the Iron Curtain.
Key Specifications
  • Architecture: Pre-x86
  • Bit Width: 8-bit data bus, 16-bit address bus
  • Clock Frequency: Typically 2 MHz
  • Packaging: 40-pin Dual In-Line Package (PDIP-40)
Historical Significance
Because of Cold War-era trade embargoes (like CoCOM), Eastern Bloc countries could not easily import western processors like the original Intel 8080. To bridge this gap, Tesla designed the MHB8080A to allow local engineers and students to study machine code and develop microprocessor-based systems.
Notable Applications
  • PMD 85: An 8-bit educational personal computer developed by Tesla Piešťany and Tesla Bratislava, which was widely used in Czech and Slovakian schools.
  • PMI-80: A single-board microcomputer created by Tesla Piešťany in 1982. It utilized a calculator-style keypad, a 9-digit 7-segment LED display, and the MHB8080A.
  • Industrial Automation: Because of its reliability and low cost in the region, the processor found use beyond education and into automated factory equipment and custom digital projects.
The MHB8080A is still sought after today by retrocomputing enthusiasts and hardware historians looking to restore Eastern Bloc vintage computers.
If you’d like to explore this topic further, I can provide information on:

    • Finding original schematics or emulators for the PMD 85
    • Sourcing vintage components via electronic surplus and collector sites

See the photographs, the ‘Tesla’ logo is clearly visible and the chips photographed are of the same batch as the ones you will receive.

These came to us as part of a lot of surplus stock from Slovenia. They are stored with us still as they came in to us, packed on foil covered polystyrene sheets and are in good condition. However having been in storage for some years we have classified them as ‘new other’. But don’t forget as with all our products they come with a full guarantee.

No date code but we believe they were manufactured in the 80’s.

This Tesla Chip is a clone of the Intel Trademarked CPU Intel 8080 family D8080A

The MHB8080A is a Czechoslovakia produced 8-bit – microprocessor, an identical and non-licensed replica of the Intel 8080 from the time of the Cold War. The processor was produced from the early 1980s to the early 1990s by Tesla as, based in Prague .

They were used in early computers (the PMD 85) in Czechoslovakia for learning programming machine code in Czech and Slovakian schools, Polytechnics and Universities in the 80’s.

The PMD 85 was an 8-bit personal computer produced from 1985 by the companies Tesla Piešťany and Tesla Bratislava in the former Czechoslovakia.

It was developed and manufactured in the Tesla Piestany factory whose core business was to produce active components like diode, transistor and integrated circuits, including the MHB 8080A CPU and other chips from this family.

It was a basic system, enclosed in a plastic case and precisely based on the MHB 8080A, a Tesla version the 8080 processor.

It had minimal ROM, RAM and I/O capabilities, but enough in schools, to enter, study and run small programs.

PLEASE NOTE!

These parts came to us as part of a lot of surplus stock from a Slovakian Co. and have been kept in storage for some time, we have therefore classified them as ‘new other’. They are however pristine, stored with us still in their original packaging, the photographs are representative of their excellent condition, being of some of our actual stock, and, as with all our products they come with a full guarantee.

If you have similar items to this, or indeed any electronic components that are surplus to requirements please contact us with details.
